Video Game Analysis: Fortnite

Story Analysis:

-What storyline drives this game? A man named Geno found an Island called Zero Point and wanted to make the perfect civilization. He did this by kidnapping people from different realities across the multiverse and forcing them to fight on the island.

- What does the character want? To be the last man standing on the island.

- What are they willing to do (what journey will they go on) to get it? Your character must collect weapons, health, and shield, and shoot down other players. You can also build forts throughout the map by chopping down trees, rocks, and pretty much anything else on the map. If you're playing with other people, you must help keep them alive and heal them if they get shot down.

Functional Analysis:

- What are the rules of the game?

- You only get one life in solo matches

- Try not to get taken down by other players

- You can only hold five items at a time.
- You can’t go off the island.
- You shouldn't team up with people in solo matches.
- You can’t go in the storm
- You can’t jump off high buildings or cliffs or you’ll die

- What buttons control character movement/gameplay?

On a console, the left joystick controls your body movement and the right joystick controls the point of view. The buttons can control crouching and jumping. The bumper buttons on top control switching items in your loadout. The trigger buttons behind the bumper buttons are aim and shoot.

 - What are the levels/chapters of the game? Within 4 chapters, there are 22 seasons. You level up by doing quests and winning battle royale, or playing in other modes like creative mode.  You level up the more you play, and there are 100+ levels.

- How do the adversaries/villains move or attack? Each season, different villains remain located at special locations waiting for your arrival to attack. Other “robots” march through the island map but won’t attack unless you attack them first. Other live players also roam the map, trying to eliminate you to win.

- How do players progress / advance in the game (complete a level, achieve a certain score, defeat the adversary/villain)? Once you shoot down another player, you are closer to winning the game. You can complete certain challenges to level up in general, but only winning first place will grant you “Victory Royale”

- What changes to game control might make gameplay more efficient? Take more preventative measures for bugs and lagging.

Engagement Analysis:

- What makes this game engaging? Fortnite has engaged with all ages for years through its cartoonish effect with ever-changing costumes, maps, and weaponry. It never stays the same, with new surprises each season. The customizations create a great engagement with players. You can build in Fortnite which also makes this game unique. There are also many different modes of the game you can play. You can play with up to 3 other friends in squads.

- What aspects of gameplay did you enjoy the most? I enjoyed it when I could defeat another player by shooting them down. I love how colorful the map and game are too.

- What aspects of gameplay were least enjoyable? The least enjoyable part of this game was the time it took to get onto the map from the flying bus over it, as well as the time it took to heal when I would lose health.

- What changes would make this game even more engaging? Although occasionally players win free stuff, I think having more free options for customizations would attract more engagement with players.
